Pandemic Pink Hair Is Trending - And Keeping Beauty Brands Afloat

IMG_2563.jpeg

Covid-19 has not been kind to the hair industry. Amidst global lockdowns, hair professionals not only had to bend over backwards to create safe, socially-distanced spaces to look after their clients, but open and close their salons as and when lockdown rules change.

Conversely, the beauty brands bringing the salon experience to people’s homes are thriving; not least of which, the brands selling semi-permanent pink hair dye.

Early last year, pink hair—or shall we say pandemic pink hair—took over social media. Particularly among influencers looking to create visually-interesting content in visually-uninteresting isolation.

And, as with most influencer-led beauty trends, brands with suitable dyes on their shelves were quick to reap the benefits.

Colour Freedom, creators of a wide range of conditioning semi-permanent hair colors, not only saw Pink Pizazz sales spike by over 1200% in the first U.K. lockdown, but sustained interest in Pink Pizazz and Magenta Dreamthroughout 2020—both of which sold five times more than any other color.

Similarly, semi-permanent color specialists Bleach sold one pink hair product every 30 seconds in 2020; a 50% increase from the previous year.

While pink hair may have been seen as an unconventional hair color pre-2020, the trend was certainly already on the rise.

Initially, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga went pink for their respective music videos at the start of the year, quickly achieving ‘hairspiration’ status.

Without salons or hairdressers to visit as lockdowns were introduced in March, many a blonde-haired celebrity followed suit; everyone from Dua Lipa to Madonna and Keke Palmer to Faith Hill whacked semi-permanent pinks on their tresses, delighting in a bit of no-commitment hair experimentation.

“For blondes, pink is always an incredibly on-trend shade and great choice for when you may be a bit bored of your current colour and are looking for a fun, playful update.”
